Grading Criteria

Testing Standards

All written testing must meet the following standards:

All written testing will be performed through the YMU online learning management system.
All written testing will be proctored by an independent third party.
Tests are closed book. Students may not have access to phones, notes, or other outboard materials. A proctor must be present for the duration of the test.

Proctor Standards

All written test proctors must meet the following standards:

Written test proctors cannot be the instructor.
Written test proctors must be present during the entire written test.
Proctors must validate the candidates ID.
Proctor cannot answer questions or interact with candidates while testing.

CAPE Standards

1. The certification must result in the award of a time-limited certificate or badge, signed or issued by a representative of the certifying agency, documenting successful completion of written and/or performance-based assessments.

The Yamaha Portable, Mid-Range, Inline, and V-Engine certifications each award a certification that is valid for 5 years. At 60 days prior to the 5 year mark, the re-certification window will open and the user will receive a notification to re-certify.

2. The certification must be developed and issued by a third-party certifying agency which is a recognized industry, trade, or professional entity for the occupations to which the credential is linked or a state or federal regulatory body for the related occupations.

Yamaha Motor Corporation U.S.A. is the certifying body, a recognized industry entity.

3. The certifying agency must require all assessments to be delivered in a proctored environment where assessment delivery is overseen by an authorized individual who ensures the identity of the test taker and the security of the testing environment.

Yamaha requires all assessments be delivered by a CAPE proctor from the school or the district. Instructors / teachers are not eligible to administer or proctor the Yamaha Portable, Mid-Range, Inline, and V-Engine certification exams.

4. The certifying agency must require the exam questions be delivered in a secure manner and not be available to the test proctor for an extended period of time, other than the time necessary to receive, distribute, and return any written materials to the scoring entity.

Test proctors have no access to exam questions or test material.

5. The certifying agency must require that written examinations be scored by the certifying agency.

The exams are scored automatically by Yamaha’s LMS, therefore the proctors have no access to scoring.

6. The certifying agency must have a testing time limit established for all written assessments required to earn the industry certification and this requirement must apply to all individuals seeking to earn the certification, notwithstanding accommodations for students with disabilities.

Testing time limit is 2 hours for each of the Yamaha Portable, Mid-Range, Inline, and V-Engine certification exams.

7. The certifying agency must provide publicly available and downloadable documentation related to the standards and requirements on the certifying agency’s website. At a minimum, the following information must be publicly posted: test blueprint, minimum performance level(s), proctoring requirements, the exam registration process, and process for approval of accommodations for candidates with disabilities.

The Yamaha Portable, Mid-Range, Inline, and V-Engine certification syllabi and course objectives are publicly available and downloadable on this website. The minimum performance level for each exam is an 80%. CAPE proctors at the school or district must be the testing proctors/administrators, instructors nor teachers can administer nor proctor the exam. Officials from the school may register students for the exam through Yamaha’s LMS, students cannot self-register for the tests. Yamaha will accommodate longer time limits on exams for candidates with disabilities, please reach out to us directly so we can accommodate.

8. The industry certification must be obtainable by a candidate for the credential without use of specific courseware or curriculum, notwithstanding any state or federal requirements for a license to practice in an occupation.

Any individual may contact a CAPE testing center in Florida and attempt the Yamaha Portable, Mid-Range, Inline, and V-Engine certification exams.
